HIPAA 5010 Solutions for Health Plans

The federal government has mandated a new version of HIPAA (the Healthcare Insurance Portability & Accountability Act) be implemented by health plans by January 2012. As a result, health plans are preparing by acquiring and implementing new cost effective software and services solutions that simplify the administrative and technical processes and workflows that will enable mandated compliance while accelerating administrative simplification. Specifically, HIPAA 5010 will change the format of data flowing between healthcare organizations relating to health benefits and claims. The change will cause organizations to take a hard look at the products and tools they currently use to process EDI healthcare related transactions (utilizing the current 4010 data sets).
Health plans are also searching for viable vendors to provide extensible solutions that will enable them to meet today’s requirements while providing an infrastructure for the future. Most of the tools that organizations currently use, originated in 2002 and 2003 when the 4010 mandate took place. These resources are obsolete and were not designed to process data flow between organizations.
